A Personal Note from Shaunti and Jeff on Thriving in Love and Money
When we were approached by Thrivent Financial, a not-for-profit financial services company, about doing research to help couples in their marriage around money, we were nervous. As social researchers, we had uncovered and applied many life-changing truths in our own marriage – but money was the last big area where we were not on the same page. Yet given how much money impacts relationships (and it doesn’t matter if you have a lot of it or barely any), we knew we had to tackle this topic.
Three years later, we are so glad we did. When any of us understand what is underneath our spouse’s responses to money – and our own – money moves from being an opportunity for conflict to an opportunity for connection.
We discovered that personally – and you can, too.

About The Research
The research process investigated one main question: “What is underneath our responses to money in marriage (or romantic partnership), that either does or does not allow us to thrive?”
The research was conducted over a three-year period by Shaunti and Jeff Feldhahn and an extensive research team, with the leadership of Dr. Charles Cowan, founder and president of Analytic Focus. Made possible by the sponsorship of Thrivent, the rigorous research process included interviews, focus groups and surveys with more than 3,000 people across a diverse array of demographics. In addition, the project drew on the Feldhahn’s accumulated research conducted with more than 20,000 men and women in nine other nationally-representative studies since 2002.
